What role does your business play in the game?  And how are you keeping score?  How will you know if you’re making progress?
We’re starting a new year and this is a GREAT time to reassess all kinds of things.  One you might want to consider is how your business is doing in the greater game and where you want to be in 3 months, 6 months, and at the end of the year.  And how you’ll know if you got there.
Why Think of Your Business As a Game?
You may or may not think of your business as being in a game – but there are some advantages to treating it that way.  Why?  Because it can be a lot of fun to do that… But also because it’s a way to keep all this work in perspective.  And most importantly, it’s a way to know if your business is heading where YOU want to go with it.
A lot of the time it’s easy to start taking this whole business project way to seriously.  I know I do that – that somehow the work I’m passionate about in the world becomes a measure of myself or my worth or the worth of my endeavor.
Keeping Score
You can keep that all in perspective if you have 5 or 6 key measures to help you keep score.  Those measures need to be tied directly to goals you have for the quarter, the year, or whatever time frame you’re using.  They can be financial, personal, team-oriented, partner-oriented, activity-oriented.
You get to make them up!  It’s your business, and you get to figure out how you’re going to play in the bigger game and what’s progress in your mind and what isn’t.
So have some fun with it!
Your Leap Challenge this week:

  • Set goals for each quarter
  • Identify how you’ll know if you’ve made the goal – what will you measure to keep score?
  • Then figure out what the score looks like if ‘reasonable progress’ is made; then ‘awesome progress’
  • How frequently will you figure out your score?  Weekly? Monthly? Daily?  What frequency will help you make changes in your actions so you can meet your goal?

Make sure you have some fun goals and that they are YOURS!  This is part of your chance to create the culture of your company – what you measure will reinforce the values of your business.
